Guwahati: Intas Foundation’s ‘Apna Ghar – Transit Homes’ initiative in Guwahati has been providing free temporary accommodation, transportation, and meals for cancer patients traveling to the city for treatment at government or private hospitals. Since its inception in December 2021, the transit home located at Hengrabari has accommodated nearly one thousand patients, offering both A/C and Non-A/C rooms for patients and their caregivers from various districts and states.

Patients can avail the accommodation for multiple cycles of treatment, lasting over a month if necessary. The initiative caters to patients with lung, liver, uterus, breast cancer, among others, and also extends guidance and counseling support to safeguard their mental well-being.

Sujoy Chakma, the project associate, highlighted that the majority of patients come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, seeking treatment at B Barooah Cancer Institute and Guwahati Medical College and Hospital. The initiative aims to create a safe and supportive environment for cancer patients and is exploring partnerships with private hospitals to expand its reach and impact.
