Guwahati: Allegations of illegal activities under the guise of tax collection have emerged from the Kar Bhawan in Guwahati, reportedly involving a tax inspector with Saikia surname.
According to a news report published in a popular daily of Assam on December 4, 2024, secret meetings between some officials and businessmen have led to actions that allegedly violate laws and ethics.
The report highlights that junior staff members of the office have verbally lodged complaints about the matter with senior department officials. However, no concrete action appears to have been taken yet.
Meanwhile, another report published in another daily- Dainik Gana Adhikar- points out Saikia’s direct involvement, adding to the controversy.
According to the Dainik Gana Adhikar report, Saikia was even convicted by a CBI court in 2013 on the charges of his alleged misconduct.
Despite his conviction, he continues to hold a high-ranking position in the Assam government, raising questions about the integrity of the system.
Meanwhile, the concerned citizens of the state have raised fingers at Saikia’s appointment and they have termed it “illegal and mysrterious” and have urged for a thorough investigation into the entire matter.
The Guwahati tried to contact the tax officer in question for a reaction on the allegations, however, we could not get through him.
