Alcohol Prices in Assam to Drop from September 1

Guwahati: Starting September 1, alcohol prices in Assam will decrease following a recent adjustment in ad-valorem taxes by the Assam Excise Department. The change, announced on August 17, affects various alcoholic beverages, including Indian-made foreign liquor, beer, wine, brandy, rum, and ready-to-drink options.

The decision comes after a price hike in March, which aimed to boost state revenue. Now, with the revised tax structure, prices are set to fall across different alcohol categories. For example, draught beer with up to 5% alcohol content will be cheaper by Rs 34 per 650ml bottle, and Indian-made spirits priced below Rs 360 will see a Rs 144 reduction per 750ml bottle.

The price cuts appear to be a strategic move ahead of the festive season, potentially reversing a decline in alcohol sales that followed the previous hike. With Assam consuming around 5.30 lakh litres of alcohol daily, generating Rs 10 crore in excise revenue, this reduction is expected to have a notable impact.
