Guwahati: Several shocking illegal activities inside Guwahati Central Jail have come to light. For a long time, a drug racket was allegedly running inside the jail. Banned items like drugs, ganja, bhang and cigarettes were supplied to inmates in exchange for money.
It is also alleged that some prisoners were allowed to enjoy liquor and meat parties inside the jail. Serious accusations have also been made that immoral activities were taking place inside the jail with the support of some jail officials.
After these allegations, the Jailor of Guwahati Central Jail, Debakamal Borah, was arrested on Thursday. Earlier on Wednesday, two Assam Police personnel posted as jail guards—Konkan Bora and Devajit Das—were arrested for helping illegal activities inside the jail.
DebaKamal Borah was arrested by Basistha Police in connection with Case No. 47/2026. He is accused of allowing the illegal sale of drugs and other banned items inside the jail. Police said that during questioning, the two arrested guards admitted that the jailor was also involved. Based on their statements, the police arrested him.
Sources said that senior jail authorities themselves had filed complaints about illegal activities inside the jail. According to the complaint, a group inside the jail was supplying drugs, intoxicants and even luxury items to prisoners. It was also alleged that some jail officials were receiving a share of the money earned from these illegal activities.
Sources claimed that Debakamal Borah was the main person behind these activities. With the help of some inmates, he allegedly created an illegal market inside the jail for liquor, bhang and gambling.
Earlier, a senior advocate had also alleged that some prisoners were enjoying special treatment inside the jail. Speaking to the media, the advocate said that inmates were allowed to use mobile phones, deal in drugs and organise parties in exchange for money. The advocate said this information came from several prisoners she had represented.
The advocate had also requested Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to take strict action in this matter. If the charges are proven in court, several jail officials and police personnel may face serious punishment and could end up in jail themselves.
