Guwahati: Senior journalist and media personality Atanu Bhuyan, a pioneering figure in Assam’s electronic news media, is set to make his directorial debut with the Assamese film Khaki. The poster of the film was recently unveiled at Jyoti Chitraban, Guwahati, sparking widespread discussion in social and political circles.
Known for his significant contributions to Assamese print and television journalism, Bhuyan had earlier led editorial changes at Asomiya Khabar and shaped several influential television news programmes. With Khaki, he now steps into filmmaking, drawing from his long experience in journalism and theatre.
The poster of Khaki presents a strong visual metaphor on power, governance and law enforcement. It depicts a police officer bearing the weight of a chair occupied by a powerful figure, symbolising the imbalance between authority and accountability. Scenes of political protests in the background further reflect contemporary political realities, giving the poster a strong socio-political context. Observers note that the timing of the poster release ahead of elections has added to its relevance.
Produced under the banner of ABCD, the film is jointly produced by Kanika Bhuyan and Aboyob Bhuyan. Atanu Bhuyan has handled the direction, story, screenplay and dialogues. The film features a cast of over 60 actors, including Pawan Gayan, Shreya Borthakur, Geetarth Sharma, Hemanta Devanath, Ishan Hazarika, Hiranmoy Bora, Nandini Bora, Jayanta Deka, Debkumar Barman and Naba Nath, with prominent roles played by Arun Nath and Dr Jahanara Begum.
Khaki is being made using modern technical processes. Digital Intermediate work is currently underway at Prasad Lab, Mumbai, with colour grading by Kiran Kota. The background score and music are being composed by Daniel B George, a Filmfare Award-winning composer. Sound design is being handled by Debajit Changmai and Amrit Pritam, while Rupankar has done the editing. Cinematography has been completed by Pradeep Daimari across locations in Tezpur, Sonapur, Khetri and Guwahati.
The film is scheduled for release across Assam on February 27, with promotional activities currently underway.
