Guwahati: Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, addressing a press conference in Guwahati, raised concerns regarding the duration of elections in India, advocating for shorter election periods aligned with the Digital India initiatives.

Ramesh highlighted the significant disparity between the duration of elections in 2004, which spanned 20 days, and the current elections, which are extending over approximately 42 days. He questioned the decision-making process of the Election Commission and the government’s vision for efficient electoral procedures.

“With Digital India, the time for conducting elections should be reduced. In 2004, elections were completed within 20 days, but now they are taking around 42 days. I am puzzled by the Election Commission and PM’s intentions,” remarked Ramesh, underscoring the imperative of leveraging digital technologies for streamlined governance.
