Guwahati: Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to take oath as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term on Tuesday, May 12, following the BJP-led NDA alliance’s massive victory in the recently concluded Assembly elections.
The swearing-in ceremony will be held in Guwahati and is expected to witness the presence of several top national leaders, including Narendra Modi.
Sarma was unanimously elected as the leader of the BJP-led NDA legislature party after the alliance secured a clear majority in the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly.
Several senior BJP leaders and Union Ministers are expected to attend the ceremony, including Amit Shah, Nirmala Sitharaman and BJP national president Nitin Nabin.
Chief Ministers from different states, including Sikkim, Mizoram, Tripura, Uttarakhand, Maharashtra and Manipur, along with Deputy Chief Ministers from Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, are also expected to attend the event.
According to sources, Prime Minister Narendra Modi may arrive in Guwahati either late Monday evening or early Tuesday morning for the ceremony.
In the Assam Assembly election, the BJP emerged as the single largest party by winning 82 seats. NDA allies Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People’s Front won 10 seats each, taking the NDA alliance tally to 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly.
