8th Chalachitram National Film Festival Concludes in Guwahati

Guwahati: The 8th edition of the Chalachitram National Film Festival concluded at Jyoti Chitraban, Guwahati, celebrating diverse films and exceptional talent. The festival, organized by Chalachitram in association with Vishwa Samvad Kendra Assam, focused on the theme “Our Heritage, Our Pride” to showcase India’s cultural legacy, social reforms, arts, tourism, and environmental issues.

Jaswandha, directed by Shoneel Yallattikar, won Best Film in the rest of India category, while Jyoti Prasad Das’s A Sylvan Saga secured the Best Film from Northeast India. Das also received the Best Director award, with Abhijit Nayak taking home Best Screenplay for Wrong Number, directed by Bijit Borgohain.

The Best Cinematography honors were shared by Angsuman Barua & Pradip Ch Sarma for Aadi Shakti Maa Kamakhya and Chida Bora & Saril Nandan Deka for Teens of 1942 (directed by Samiran Deka). Bhaskar Jyoti Bhuyan won Best Editing for Birubala – The Crusader, while the jury gave a special mention to A Letter To My Home by Devajani Halder.

The festival, which showcased 50 films in both competitive and non-competitive categories, was inaugurated by Cotton University Vice-Chancellor Ramesh Ch Deka. The opening film, The Last Generation by Prabal Khaund, set the tone for two days of screenings. Highlights included films like Prayojan (Krishna Das), The Butcher (Tashi Wangshu MJ), and Journey with A Dance Form (Pranjal Pratim Chetia).

The closing ceremony, attended by noted personalities like actress Mridula Barua and filmmakers Atul Gangowar and Santosh Pathare, featured performances and discussions, with winners receiving cash prizes, trophies, and certificates.

The festival drew film enthusiasts to Jyoti Chitraban, which holds historical significance as a hub for Assamese cinema, named after the pioneering filmmaker Rupkonwar Jyotiprasad Agarwala.
