Guwahati: Ramanuj Goswami, the prime accused in the Basisthapur wife-murder case, died early Monday morning after allegedly attempting to escape from police custody in Guwahati.
According to preliminary information, the incident took place around 2 am to 3 am when Goswami was being transported in a police vehicle after being brought to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for a medical examination.
Goswami allegedly jumped from the police vehicle while it was passing through the hilly area near GMCH and attempted to flee. An incident followed during the police effort to apprehend him, after which Goswami died.
The exact circumstances surrounding his death have not yet been officially detailed, and further information from the police is awaited.
Goswami was the prime accused in the gruesome murder of his 25-year-old wife, Riya Talukdar, in Guwahati’s Basisthapur area.
According to the case details, a violent argument allegedly broke out between the couple on September 3. Goswami is accused of attacking Riya with a dao and killing her. He allegedly dismembered her body and kept her severed head inside a refrigerator at their residence.
The crime came to light after neighbours detected a foul smell from the locked apartment. Goswami later surrendered before police and was taken into custody for questioning.
His death following the alleged escape attempt marks a major development in the Basisthapur murder case. Police are expected to provide further details regarding the incident, the exact location and the circumstances that led to his death.
