Tea Garden Workers Stage Massive Protest in Tinsukia
Tinsukia: Assam’s tea community staged a massive protest in Tinsukia district, demanding higher daily wages, land ownership rights, and recognition of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
The demonstration, held in the Kopab area, took place shortly after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s visit to the region and led to major traffic disruptions as protestors blocked key roads.
The agitation was organised by several organisations, including the All Assam Tea Tribes Association (AATSA), All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam (AASAA), and Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS). Leaders of these bodies accused the government of failing to act on long-pending promises despite repeated assurances.
“We have been urging the government again and again. They promised to fulfill our demands, but nothing has changed,” said protesters.
The tea community has long sought a revision of daily wages, distribution of land titles (pattas), and ST recognition. While the government has stated that discussions are ongoing, protestors allege unnecessary delays.
Earlier, tea tribe and Adivasi representatives had warned of intensifying their agitation if the government failed to address their concerns.
The protest highlights the community’s enduring struggle for economic, social, and legal recognition in Assam.
