Darrang: Twelve staff members, including the principal, of Padumpukhuri High School in Mangaldoi, Darrang district, have been transferred following the tragic death of a Class 9 student on September 23, 2024. The Assam government took action, citing “gross negligence” on the part of the staff.

Education Minister Ranoj Pegu confirmed the transfers in a social media post, stating that the Office of the Inspector of Schools, Darrang, issued the order. The transfer affects both teaching and non-teaching staff, including the in-charge principal, Janaki Deka.

The transfer order highlighted the staff’s failure to fulfill their duties and responsibilities during school hours, which led to the tragic incident. The principal of Burhinagar Senior Secondary School has now been assigned to take charge of Padumpukhuri High School.

The Class 9 student died after being injured during a confrontation with some Class 10 students. He was first taken to Deomornoi Hospital and later referred to Mangaldai Civil Hospital, where he was declared dead. The altercation reportedly occurred between the first and second periods, and a Class 10 student has been detained for questioning.

Alongside the police investigation, the School Education Department has also launched an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
