Guwahati: The Singapore Police will meet members of Assam’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) on October 21 to discuss the ongoing investigation into the death of popular singer-composer Zubeen Garg.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the SIT, led by Additional DGP Munna Prasad Gupta, will travel to Singapore on October 20. “This is another step towards justice for Zubeen,” the Chief Minister said on Thursday.

Zubeen Garg died by drowning while swimming off an island in Singapore on September 19. In connection with his death, seven people — including event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta and Zubeen’s manager Siddharth Sharma — were arrested by the Assam Police. Another some Singapore-based Assamese expatriates have been summoned for questioning.

Public pressure has been mounting on the State government to ensure close coordination with the Singapore authorities for a transparent and thorough probe.

Tensions remain high among Zubeen’s fans across Assam, with emotional reactions continuing even after nearly a month of his death. Earlier this week, violent clashes erupted in Baksa district’s Mushalpur as five accused were being shifted to the newly built Baksa Central Jail.

To ensure their safety, the court ordered that the accused be kept in a facility with no other prisoners, as many inmates are believed to be fans of the late singer.

Following the violence, police imposed restrictions, suspended mobile internet services, and made over 10 arrests in connection with the attack on the police convoy that was transporting the accused. Several vehicles, including two police ones, were torched, and dozens were injured.
