Guwahati: Sibsagar MLA and Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi has apologised for his comment that Muslims who vote for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are “kafirs” and would be punished by God.

He made this statement on Saturday (April 26, 2025) while campaigning for the panchayat elections in Naoboicha area of Lakhimpur district, Assam. After facing heavy criticism from people within and outside his party, Gogoi gave an “unconditional apology” through social media late at night.

In his apology video, Gogoi said, “I moved away from progressive and rational thinking and made a statement that I should not have. I made a mistake and I seek forgiveness from everyone.”

During his campaign, Gogoi had first attacked the Badruddin Ajmal-led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), calling it the “B-team” of the BJP and accusing it of supporting communal politics. He also criticised Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, saying Sarma survives by creating divisions among people.

Gogoi further targeted some Congress leaders, accusing them of not following the rules of their alliance, especially in Sibsagar district.
