Guwahati: Dr Amal Chandra Kataki, the former Director of Dr B. Borooah Cancer Institute in Guwahati, has received an honorary Doctor of Science (D.Sc) degree from Gauhati University. He was honoured for his great work in cancer treatment, research, and education.
Dr Kataki has spent many years helping people fight cancer. He has written 218 research papers in important national and international journals. He has also edited three well-known books on cancer studies. These books are used by doctors and students around the world.
He also wrote his life story in a book called Silent Contemplation…Awakening the Inner Protagonist…, which he gave to the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, in 2022.
Dr Kataki was the first Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Annals of Oncology Research and Therapy. He was also a member of the Governing Committee of the National Cancer Registry Programme under ICMR for 17 years.
At present, he is a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the National Cancer Genome Atlas and the Research Advisory Committee of AIIMS, Guwahati.
After getting the award, Dr Kataki thanked Assam Governor and University Chancellor Laxman Prasad Acharya, Vice Chancellor, and the Executive Council of Gauhati University. He said the honour is not just for him but for everyone working hard in cancer care and treatment.
Dr Kataki gave special thanks to Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma for taking big steps to make cancer care affordable and setting up new cancer hospitals across the state.
Dr Kataki is now the Director of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences in Guwahati. He continues to work to make healthcare better in Assam and the Northeast.
