Former MP Ripun Bora has returned to the Congress party, just a week after stepping down as the Assam Trinamool Congress president. On Sunday, September 8, 2024, he officially rejoined Congress during an extended executive meeting of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee in Charaideo. The event was attended by Congress leaders, including All India Congress Committee general secretary for Assam, Jitendra Singh, and State party president Bhupen Kumar Borah.

Expressing his joy at returning to Congress, Bora said, “I am proud to come back to my old home after being away for two-and-a-half years. I realized that staying in Trinamool would only divide votes. We need to strengthen Congress because it is the only party capable of defeating the Bharatiya Janata Party in Assam.”

Jitendra Singh welcomed Bora’s return, calling it unconditional and stating, “Congress is in his DNA, and we are happy to have him back as a party worker.”

Bora had previously served as the president of the Assam Congress from 2016 to 2021 but left for Trinamool in 2022 following criticism over the party’s poor performance in the 2021 elections. He had also held the post of Assam’s Education Minister during the 15-year Congress government under Tarun Gogoi.
