Guwahati: Ripun Bora, the president of the Assam Trinamool Congress (TMC), has stepped down from his position, citing challenges related to the party’s regional image as a significant barrier to its growth in Assam.
Bora, a seasoned politician and former Minister, had been leading the Assam TMC since 2022. Despite his efforts, he highlighted in his resignation letter to All India Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee that the party struggled to gain traction in Assam due to its perception as a regional entity rooted in West Bengal.
“While Assam Trinamool Congress has great potential, the recurring perception of it being a regional party from West Bengal has hindered our progress,” Bora noted in his letter. He also mentioned that various suggestions were made to counter this perception, but the efforts did not yield the desired results.
Bora’s resignation has sparked speculation about his possible return to the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, where he previously served as president from 2016 to 2021. This move could significantly impact the political landscape in Assam, particularly with upcoming elections on the horizon.
