MORIGAON: Several rare and important migratory water birds have been spotted this season at Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary under the Guwahati Wildlife Division.

Bird experts and photographers from Assam recently recorded species such as the White-fronted Goose, Pied Avocet, Falcated Duck, Ferruginous Pochard, Northern Pintail, Great Crested Grebe, and Common Pochard. These birds were mainly seen in three key beels of the sanctuary — Tamuliduva, Pagladuva, and Hanhchora.

Renowned birders including Dr. Udayan Borthakur, Binod Deka, Debajit Nath, Prasanna Kalita, Umesh Deka, and Naruttam Deka confirmed the sightings.

The Forest Department, with support from NGOs and other groups, will soon conduct a detailed bird count to identify the total number of species and their population in Pobitora. The sanctuary is already recognised as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International.
