Guwahati: Assam has recorded 39 custodial deaths and 183 cases of accused persons being injured or shot by police over the last four-and-a-half years. The information was presented in the Assam Legislative Assembly on Saturday during the last day of the Winter Session.
Responding to a question raised by Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi, the state Home Minister informed the House that all such incidents—whether deaths or injuries—have been officially registered in concerned police stations.
The minister said that, as per CrPC Section 174(1), BNSS Section 194(1) and NHRC guidelines, judicial magistrate inquiries were conducted in 78 cases of custodial deaths.
A total of 180 cases of death and injury were taken up for judicial investigation.
41 Deaths Before Custody
The Assembly was also informed that 41 accused died before being taken into police custody, while 40 others were injured in police action during this period—from May 10, 2021 to November 19, 2025.
