Guwahati: Police detained Mahbabul Haque, Chancellor of the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM), from his Guwahati residence early Saturday morning. A police team from Sribhumi district carried out the operation but did not reveal the reason for his detention.
Reports suggest that Haque’s detention is linked to allegations of unfair practices during the CBSE Class 12 Physics exam at Kendriya Vidyalaya in Sribhumi. The controversy started when reports revealed that 274 students appeared for the exam at the center, with 214 students from the Education Research & Development (ERD) Foundation, an institution founded by Haque.
Haque was involved in a controversy last year over worsening floods in Guwahati, claiming that water from the USTM campus, located on a nearby hill, caused severe flooding in the city.
