Guwahati: The Wildlife Range of Pobitora under the Guwahati Wildlife Division observed World Wetlands Day at Tamuliduva Wetland today. The event, organized with Aranyak NGO, involved students from Hadukpar LP School, Mayong. Experts discussed the importance of wetlands and their conservation to raise awareness among students.

The Asian Water Bird Census 2025 recorded 10,933 water birds of 56 species in Pobitora’s wetlands. This is a significant rise from 7,225 birds in 2024. Experts noted that 80% of these birds are migratory, while 20% are resident species.

Tamuliduva Wetland, the largest wetland in Pobitora, contributes to the sanctuary’s rich biodiversity. Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, declared in 1987, covers 38.85 sq km and includes the Rajamayong and Pobitora Reserve Forests.

The sanctuary is home to 107 one-horned rhinoceroses (2022 Census), along with 22 species of mammals, 375 species of birds, 27 species of reptiles, 9 species of amphibians, and 39 species of fish.

Experts emphasized the need for wetland conservation to protect migratory birds and maintain ecological balance. The event highlighted Pobitora’s role in supporting wildlife and promoting environmental awareness.
