Guwahati: Following the mysterious death of Nimisha Thakuria, Guwahati Police have tightened monitoring of hotels, homestays, lodges and guest houses across the city.
The police held a special meeting with owners and managers of temporary accommodation facilities and issued several directions to prevent irregularities and improve guest safety.
The meeting was held on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Guwahati Police DCP Bolin Deori. Following the recent incident in the Dharapur-Garal area, police asked accommodation providers to strictly follow all existing rules and regulations.
According to the police directions, hotels, homestays, lodges and guest houses must check a valid photo identity document before giving a room to any guest.
Accommodation providers have also been instructed to properly record and preserve guest identification details.
Police have asked managements to remain particularly careful when young people book rooms. They have warned that rooms must not be provided without proper verification of valid documents.
If an accommodation facility fails to check the required documents before allowing a guest to stay, legal action may be taken against the establishment, police said.
The police have also directed accommodation providers to prominently display the Assam Police emergency helpline number 112 inside and outside every room and at other easily visible locations.
Hotels and homestays have been asked to immediately inform the nearest police station if they notice any suspicious activity, unusual incident or situation that may create a safety concern.
The latest police action comes after allegations that a homestay in Dharapur had provided accommodation without properly checking a guest’s identity documents.
Following the incident, police reportedly sealed the homestay.
The latest meeting indicates increased police monitoring of hotels, homestays, lodges and guest houses in Guwahati. Police have also warned that establishments found violating the rules may face legal action.
The move is aimed at improving guest verification, maintaining proper records and strengthening safety measures at temporary accommodation facilities across the city.
