Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report about the detention of a journalist in Guwahati. The journalist, working for a digital news portal, was reportedly called to Panbazar police station and detained on March 25 after covering a protest outside Assam Cooperative Apex Bank Ltd.

According to the report, the journalist had questioned the bank’s Managing Director about alleged financial irregularities. However, no official reason was given for his detention.

The NHRC has stated that, if true, this incident raises concerns about human rights violations. The Commission has sent a notice to the Assam Director General of Police, asking for a detailed report within four weeks.

The protest outside the bank was organized to demand a high-level inquiry into the alleged financial mismanagement and strict action against those responsible.
