Kathmandu: The Press Emblem Campaign (PEC), a global media rights group, expressed shock over the killing of Nepali journalist Suresh Rajak. A violent pro-monarchy mob burned him alive in Kathmandu on March 28, 2025. PEC has asked for a fair investigation into the incident.

Local reports say the mob was demanding the return of monarchy in Nepal. They set fire to a house in Teku. Rajak, a 35-year-old journalist from Avenues TV, went to cover the protest. He could not escape when the fire spread. Nepal Police spokesperson Dinesh Kumar Acharya said officers found Rajak’s body on the fourth floor of the burnt building.

The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) strongly condemned the attack on media houses and the killing of Rajak. Journalists held a condolence meeting on Saturday at Radhakrishna Chowk in Kathmandu. They demanded justice for Rajak and better security for media workers.

PEC president Blaise Lempen expressed deep sadness over Rajak’s death. He said protesters have the right to express their views but should not use violence. He urged the Nepalese government to investigate the case properly and provide compensation to Rajak’s family.

PEC’s South and Southeast Asia representative, Nava Thakuria, reported that Rajak is the first journalist killed in Nepal in 2025. So far, 44 journalists have been killed worldwide this year. In 2024, Nepal lost one journalist, Suresh Bhul, to an attack.
