Guwahati: The birth anniversary of Devarshi Narad, known as the world’s first journalist, was celebrated in Guwahati on Sunday at Sudarshanalaya. The event was organised by Vishwa Samvad Kendra (VSK), Assam.
Senior journalist and political commentator Harshvardhan Tripathi delivered the keynote speech. He said that Devarshi Narad was fearless, honest, and selfless, and today’s journalists should follow his example. He also said that journalism today is facing challenges and needs courage and truth to serve the nation.
On the occasion, well-known Assamese children’s writer and editor Shantanu Tamuli (Pramod Tamuli) was honoured with the Devarshi Narad Jayanti Award 2025. He received a citation, Cheleng Chadar, memento, a cash prize of Rs 50,000, and a collection of books.
Three city-based journalists were also felicitated:

- Diganta Saharia (Prag News)
- Khanin Deka (Niyomiya Barta)
The event began with the lighting of a lamp in front of Bharat Mata’s statue. The Narad Strotra was recited by Sharat Rag, and the program was moderated by Naba Bujarbarua.
VSK Assam secretary Kishor Shivam welcomed the guests. Others present included president Gauranga Sharma, vice-president Guru Prasad Medhi, RSS Asom Kshetra Prachar Pramukh Sunil Mahanty, and Assam Publication Board secretary Pramod Kalita.
The event highlighted the values of truthful and responsible journalism inspired by Devarshi Narad.
