Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has officially named Kanad Purkayastha, Secretary of BJP Assam Pradesh, as its candidate for the upcoming biennial Rajya Sabha elections from Assam. The announcement was made through a party notification on Saturday, following the approval of the Central Election Committee.
Welcoming the decision, Assam BJP President Dilip Saikia issued a statement expressing gratitude to the party’s central leadership. “I thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP National President JP Nadda, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma for selecting a dedicated party worker like Kanad Purkayastha for this important role,” said Saikia.
Following the announcement, Purkayastha took to social media to express his heartfelt appreciation. He wrote: “I extend my deepest gratitude to the esteemed leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party for considering my name as a candidate to represent Assam in the Rajya Sabha. This gesture is not just an acknowledgment of my dedication and service to the party, but also a reaffirmation of the values we uphold—commitment, integrity, and selfless service.”
He added, “Assam is not just my home; it is my inspiration, my strength. To be considered for such a significant responsibility is both a great honour and a humbling moment in my journey. I remain ever committed to the ideals of our party and to the progress and unity of our beloved state and nation.”
He also thanked Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, State BJP President Dilip Saikia, and all BJP karyakartas for their support and blessings.
Earlier this month, the Assam BJP shortlisted 13 names for one of the two Rajya Sabha seats from the state, while the second seat has been allocated to BJP ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). The Election Commission of India has announced that polling for both seats will take place on June 19, with the last date for nominations on June 9, scrutiny on June 10, withdrawal by June 12, and vote counting scheduled for 5 PM on June 19.
With this nomination, the BJP has officially begun its preparations for the crucial Rajya Sabha elections in Assam.
