Guwahati: In a tragic turn of events, Shiladitya Chetia, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer serving as secretary in the home and political departments of the Assam government, allegedly died by suicide shortly after his wife’s death. His wife had been suffering from cancer for an extended period.
Senior police officials reported that Chetia had been on leave for the past four months. After learning of his wife’s passing, Chetia requested time to pray beside her body. Moments later, gunshots were heard, and he was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
Expressing his condolences on social media platform X, Assam Director General of Police G.P. Singh wrote, “In an unfortunate turn of events, Shiladitya Chetia IPS 2009 RR, Secretary Home & Political Government of Assam, took his own life this evening, a few minutes after the attending physician declared the death of his wife who was battling cancer for a long time. The entire Assam Police family is in deep grief.”
Chetia, who previously served as the superintendent of police (SP) in the Tinsukia and Sonitpur districts of Assam, was known for his dedication and service. His sudden demise has left the Assam Police and the wider community in mourning.
