Guwahati: In a disturbing trend, Guwahati has witnessed three serious crimes in just three days — all reportedly connected to extra-marital affairs. The incidents have sparked concern among locals, especially in a society like Assam where relationships and marriages are considered sacred.

10-Year-Old Boy Killed by Mother and Her Lover

On May 11, the body of a 10-year-old boy was found inside a suitcase in Guwahati. Assam Police arrested the boy’s mother, Dipali Rajbongshi, and her lover, Jyotimoy Haloi. During questioning, both confessed to the murder. People believe the motive was linked to the woman’s extra-marital relationship.

Youth Killed in Love Triangle

In another tragic case, 26-year-old Mriganka Barman from Japarkuchi, Nalbari, was attacked and killed on Monday at a market in Gorchuk on May 12 . The accused, Raju Ali (31), was arrested the same day. Initial report says both men were in love with the same married woman, which may have led to the deadly fight.

Woman Attacked by Apartment Guard

On Wednesday, May 14, a woman named Saraswati Das was attacked with a sharp weapon by the security guard of an apartment in Guwahati’s Dhirenpara area. She worked as a domestic helper in the building. The accused has been arrested, and the victim is undergoing treatment. This incident is also suspected to be linked to a relationship issue.

Experts Speak on Rising Infidelity and Crime

Psychiatrist Dr. Jayanta Das told The Guwahati that cheating in relationships is not a new issue, but its nature has changed. “Mental stress, lack of time, and the influence of social media are affecting people’s emotions and choices,” he said. He also mentioned that easy access to relationships through social media has changed how people value love.

Legal expert Santanu Kumar Sarkar, an advocate at Gauhati High Court, said, “In court, only strong evidence can prove guilt. A weak chargesheet or poor investigation often helps the accused walk free. That’s why the role of the police and public prosecutor is very important.”

What Studies Say About Cheating

According to international research, around 35% of men and 25% of women in committed relationships have admitted to cheating. Studies show men often cheat for physical reasons, while women cheat more for emotional reasons. Experts say changing lifestyles and values are key reasons for such behavior.

Concern for Society

These three back-to-back incidents have raised serious questions about the changing nature of relationships and growing emotional stress in society. Experts are calling for more awareness, stronger mental health support, and better communication in families and relationships to stop such crimes in the future.
