Guwahati: The Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST) celebrated its 47th Foundation Day with great enthusiasm and a series of academic and cultural events at its campus.

IASST, conceived and nurtured by the Assam Science Society, was inaugurated by Nobel Laureate Dorothy C. Hodgkin on November 3, 1979. Initially supported by the Government of Assam as an autonomous R&D institute, IASST was taken over by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, in March 2009. Since then, the institute has been working towards becoming a centre of excellence in frontier research in Physical and Life Sciences and contributing to scientific advancement and societal development.

The celebration began with the hoisting of the institute flag and lighting of the ceremonial lamp. Prof. Ashis Kumar Mukherjee, Director of IASST, extended a warm welcome to all guests and highlighted the institute’s remarkable journey and achievements over the years.

The inaugural session was graced by eminent academicians including Prof. B. L. Ahuja, Vice-Chancellor, Bodoland University; Prof. Subhash Chandra Lakhotia, Distinguished Professor of Zoology, Banaras Hindu University; and Prof. Dhanapati Deka, Vice-Chancellor, Bhattadev University, among other dignitaries.

Two popular scientific lectures were delivered during the session — on Dr. Dorothy Hodgkin and Dr. C.V. Raman — by Prof. Lakhotia and Prof. Ahuja, respectively.

As part of the celebration, research scholars who were awarded Ph.D. degrees during the last year were felicitated. Additionally, faculty members who were included in the world’s top 2% most cited scientists list and those elected as Fellows of the National Academy of Sciences were also honoured.

The event concluded with a cultural program featuring performances by research scholars and staff, adding a festive touch to the academic celebration.
