Guwahati: An empty cartridge was recovered from a bag during security checking at the swearing-in ceremony of Himanta Biswa Sarma at Khanapara on Tuesday.
Following the recovery, security personnel detained a youth and took him to Basistha Police Station for questioning. Police immediately launched an investigation into the matter.
Guwahati Police Deputy Commissioner Taburam Pegu later informed the media that the recovered item was not a live bullet but an empty cartridge.
According to police, the cartridge belonged to Latika Barman, a resident of Japorigog in Guwahati. She reportedly told investigators that she had kept the empty cartridge in her bag believing it could be used as a talisman to ward off bad luck.
Police said the woman had accidentally left the bag inside a Magic vehicle while going towards the main venue of the ceremony. Later, the vehicle driver, Pulak Deka from Satgaon, arrived at the venue to return the bag. During security screening, the empty cartridge was detected.
After investigation, police confirmed that there was no criminal motive or conspiracy linked to the incident. The detained youth and the woman were later released.
