New Delhi: The Central Government has introduced a new rule that doctor’s prescription necessary to buy cough syrups and some other medicinal syrups from pharmacies.

According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, changes have been made to the Drugs Rules, 1945. Under the revised rule, syrups have reportedly been removed from the list of medicines that could earlier be purchased without a prescription.

People will have to show a valid doctor’s prescription while buying cough syrups and other medicinal syrups.

Health experts say the decision has been taken to prevent the misuse of cough syrups. In recent years, several cases of people, especially youngsters, using certain cough syrups as intoxicants have been reported from different parts of the country.

Doctors also say that many people take cough syrups without medical advice, which can sometimes lead to health problems or delay proper treatment.

The Health Ministry had first released a draft proposal on the issue in December 2025 and invited suggestions from doctors, pharmaceutical companies, pharmacy owners and the public before issuing the final notification.

The new rule has received mixed reactions. Some pharmacy owners have welcomed the move, saying it will help stop the misuse of medicines. Others feel that people with common cough and cold problems may now need to visit a doctor, leading to extra time and expenses.

The government said the main aim of the decision is to protect public health and ensure the safe use of medicines. Pharmacies violating the rules may face legal action.
