Guwahati: Lok Sabha MP Dilip Saikia has been appointed as the new president of the Assam unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), just over a year before the 2026 Assembly elections.
Mr. Saikia, 51, filed his nomination on January 16, 2025, in the presence of key leaders, including Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Sambit Patra, Sunil Bansal, Harish Dwivedi, and other senior State leaders. He was elected unopposed the following day, with Mr. Shekhawat, the election’s returning officer, formally handing him the appointment letter.
Mr. Saikia succeeds Bhabesh Kalita, who served as the BJP’s Assam unit president during an extended term. Chief Minister Sarma praised Mr. Kalita’s leadership, crediting him for the BJP’s success in the 2024 parliamentary elections, where the party achieved its best-ever tally, and for increasing the NDA’s seats in the Assam Assembly from 74 to 84.
A two-time Member of Parliament, Mr. Saikia represents the Darrang-Udalguri constituency. He has a strong background in student politics, having held key roles in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He also served as a national general secretary of the BJP.
With his leadership, the BJP aims to strengthen its organizational structure and prepare for the upcoming Assembly elections in Assam.
