Guwahati: The Deshi Janagosthiya Mancha has called for better representation of Deshi communities in the newly formed Kamatapur Autonomous Council. The council was created under the Kamatapur Autonomous Council Act, 2020, to support the Koch-Rajbongshi community in the districts of Dhubri, Goalpara, South Salmara-Mankachar, and Bongaigaon (excluding Rabha-Hasong and BTC areas).

According to a press statement by the Deshi Janagosthiya Mancha, 25 out of the 26 council seats are reserved for the Koch-Rajbongshi community, with only one seat open to other communities. However, in these four districts, the number of Deshi community members is significantly higher than that of the Koch-Rajbongshi population.

Islamul Haque Mondal, president of Deshi Janagosthiya Mancha, Assam, stated, “It will be difficult to find enough constituencies with more than 50 percent Koch-Rajbongshi population without including villages dominated by Deshi Janagosthiya people. Therefore, we demand that the Assam government reserves an appropriate number of seats for Deshi Janagosthiya people by amending the act.”
