A trans-border smuggler was neutralized in a self-defense firing incident by the Border Security Force (BSF) in the Gitaldah area of Coochbehar, West Bengal, on the morning of April 3, 2025.
At around 5:00 AM, BSF personnel spotted a group of smugglers trying to breach the border fence during a routine night patrol. When challenged, the smugglers attacked the BSF sentry with traditional weapons like dahs and lathis. Outnumbered and facing an imminent threat, the BSF personnel issued warnings before firing in self-defense, following standard procedures.
One smuggler suffered fatal injuries, while the others escaped in the darkness. The group was smuggling psychotropic substances from India to Bangladesh.
The BSF remains committed to protecting India’s borders and preventing illegal activities while ensuring proportional use of force as per operational guidelines.
