Arunjit Borah’s Goodbye Guruji to Premiere at Festival Gange Sur Seine, Paris
Guwahati: Filmmaker Arunjit Borah’s latest feature film Goodbye Guruji has been officially selected for the prestigious Festival Gange Sur Seine in Paris, France, where it will have its global premiere next month.
Starring Partha Pratim Hazarika and Aimee Barua in lead roles, Goodbye Guruji is a poignant tale of transformation through education and perseverance. The film follows Prayash Saikia, affectionately called Guruji, a young teacher who introduces innovative methods to inspire children at Kinkinia Primary School and restore the community’s faith in education.
Interwoven with the mythological tale of Kansa Badh from Assam’s 500-year-old Bhaona theatre tradition, the narrative reflects Guruji’s struggles and triumphs, echoing the timeless theme of good prevailing over adversity.
Expressing his joy over the selection, writer-director Arunjit Borah said:
“Goodbye Guruji is a heartfelt exploration of the transformative power of education and innovative teaching. My belief in perseverance, innovation, and empathy as tools to overcome barriers lies at the heart of this film. It is a tribute to those who dare to think differently and inspire us to dream of a better tomorrow.”
Explaining why the film was chosen, Chayan Sarkar, president of Gange Sur Seine, Paris, remarked:
“Arunjit Borah is a powerful filmmaker who experiments with serious subjects within simple backdrops. His earlier short film Zibah was very well received in Paris. Goodbye Guruji is a visual feast – profound yet subtle in its storytelling. The director’s use of rural Assam as his canvas, combined with the folk tradition of Bhaona, creates a mystic, surreal cinematic experience.”
Slated for release next year, the film also stars Rupjyoti Mahanta, Rupkumar Borah, Naba Mahanta, and Anyun Kashyap. It is produced by the National Film Development Corporation of India (NFDC) in association with Cinecraft Productions, with support from the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India.
The story is by Sanjeev Tiwari, while the screenplay is co-written by Arunjit Borah and Maharshi Tuhin Kashyap, who also serves as associate director. The film’s visual identity has been shaped by director of photography Asutosh Kashyap, art director Arup Dutta, make-up designer Panku Hazarika, and DI colourist Hadwit Baglari. Music is composed by Tarali Sarma, with sound design and RR mixing by Debajit Gayan. Editing is by Rantu Chetia, with Chinmay Dutta as chief assistant director, Prithul Kumar as producer, and Vivek Agarwal of Cinecraft Productions as co-producer.
