Guwahati: Aminul Islam, the general secretary of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), resigned from all party posts on Monday following the party’s loss in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Assam. Islam, who represents the Mankachar assembly constituency, cited the party’s performance as the reason for his resignation.

“I take responsibility for the defeat of the party candidates in the Lok Sabha polls and hereby resign from all party posts,” Islam told the media.

AIUDF contested three seats in Assam—Dhubri, Nagaon, and Karimganj—but failed to win any. Badruddin Ajmal, AIUDF supremo, who has held Dhubri since 2009, lost to Congress leader Rakibul Hussain.

In the overall results, the BJP secured nine out of Assam’s 14 Lok Sabha seats, Congress won three, and BJP allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United Peoples’ Party, Liberal (UPPL) won one seat each, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI).
