Guwahati: The All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD) has expressed serious concern over the growing misuse of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to generate fake medical prescriptions, warning that the trend poses a major threat to public health.

In a statement, AIOCD President J.S. Shinde and General Secretary Rajiv Singhal said recent media reports and surveys indicate that certain online platforms are accepting AI-generated prescriptions. They cautioned that this development has enabled the illegal online sale of antibiotics, psychotropic drugs, opioids and Schedule H and H1 medicines without proper medical supervision.

Unlike offline pharmacies, online platforms often lack effective human verification systems, making it extremely difficult to detect AI-generated fake prescriptions.

The AIOCD warned that the unchecked sale of restricted medicines through such channels could have serious consequences, including drug abuse, antimicrobial resistance and other health risks.

Haladhar Deka, Secretary of the Chemists and Druggists Association, urged the government to immediately withdraw GSR 817(E) and GSR 220(E), shut down illegal e-pharmacies and declare AI-generated prescriptions illegal across the country.

The organisation has called for strict enforcement measures to safeguard public health and ensure that medicines are dispensed only through authorised and regulated channels.
