Guwahati: Panic spread in parts of Guwahati on Friday amid Saraswati Puja celebrations after bomb threat emails were sent to two private schools in the city. The incident took place just ahead of Republic Day, raising security concerns among students, parents, and school authorities.
According to reports, threatening emails claiming an IED (improvised explosive device) blast were sent to some of schools. Following the emails, the city police and bomb disposal teams immediately swung into action.
West Guwahati Deputy Commissioner of Police Nomal Mahato informed the media that the threat was completely fake.
“As soon as we received the information, we followed our standard operating procedures. Bomb disposal teams thoroughly searched the school premises, but no suspicious object or explosive was found,” he said.
Police officials stated that the emails were hoax messages and appeared to be a deliberate attempt to create fear during the festive period of Saraswati Puja. They said such acts may have been carried out by miscreants trying to disturb the peaceful atmosphere of the festival.
The DCP added that the situation was brought under control immediately and students, parents, and school authorities were reassured. Police are now investigating to identify the person who sent the emails.
Mahato also said that strict security measures are already in place in view of Saraswati Puja and the upcoming Republic Day celebrations. Police patrol vehicles are deployed across the city, and regular security checks are being conducted.
Police warned that strict legal action will be taken against those involved in spreading panic through false threats. The city police urged people not to panic or spread rumours and assured that security arrangements in Guwahati have been further strengthened.
