Guwahati: The Hans Foundation, in collaboration with the Department of Secondary Education, Government of Assam, has launched a state-wide music talent hunt and mentorship programme for students of tea garden communities.
The initiative will cover 54 Model Schools located in tea garden areas of Sonitpur, Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts. These schools are supported under The Hans Foundation’s Uttam Xikhya programme, which aims to improve education quality for tea tribe children. The number of schools under the programme is expected to increase to 101 by April.
More than 14,000 students have already been taking part in regular music classes conducted by trained music teachers in these schools. The talent hunt will begin with school-level auditions, followed by district-level selections. A total of 160 students will be shortlisted, out of which 15 finalists will be selected for advanced training.
The finalists will receive intensive mentorship in Guwahati, with the grand finale scheduled on February 6. The top five winners will be awarded education scholarships up to post-graduation level and an exposure visit to renowned singer Suresh Wadkar’s music institute in Mumbai.
Officials said the programme aims to promote holistic education, boost confidence, and create new opportunities for talented children from tea garden communities.
