Pollution Control Board’s Silence Raises Doubts
Guwahati: Even after the Government of India banned many types of single-use plastic through a Gazette notification, these plastic items are still being made and used openly in Assam. The 2021 order stopped the production, import, storage, sale and use of plastic items that are used once and create a lot of waste.
The Pollution Control Board of each state was given the duty to make sure the ban is followed. They must ensure that no banned plastic is made, stored or sold. But in Assam, the Pollution Control Board is being accused of not doing its job properly.
Reports say that the Board’s inaction has allowed banned plastic to be sold freely everywhere. There are serious allegations against some officials for ignoring the issue.
It is also said that the Board only acts for a few days when the government becomes strict. For the rest of the time, they remain silent. Because of this, banned plastic is now easily found across the state.
People are now questioning: Who is protecting these illegal traders? Why is the Pollution Control Board not taking action? The Board’s silence has created doubt among the public.
