AMU Alumni Association, Assam, Celebrates Sir Syed Day in Guwahati
Guwahati: The Aligarh Muslim University Old Boys’ Association (AMUOBA) / Alumni Association, Assam, celebrated Sir Syed Day with great enthusiasm and reverence to mark the 208th birth anniversary of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, the visionary founder of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Aligarh. The commemorative event was held at the Gauhati Town Club, Panbazar, Guwahati.
The programme began with a welcome address by Mr. Ziaul Kamar, President of the Association and Senior Advocate of the Gauhati High Court, who greeted the alumni and guests while highlighting the enduring relevance of Sir Syed’s educational vision.
Md. Khalid Umar, General Secretary of the Association, entrepreneur, and social worker, presented the Secretary’s Report, outlining the Association’s recent initiatives and upcoming plans. He also mentioned the Association’s condolence visit to the family of the late Zubeen Garg on September 28, during which a letter of condolence was formally handed over.
The event’s Chief Guest, Prof. Shikhar Kumar Sarma, Dean, Faculty of Technology, and Director of Brahmaputra Studies, Gauhati University, delivered an insightful address on Sir Syed Ahmad Khan’s contribution to India’s modern education movement and AMU’s continuing impact in shaping progressive thought.
Hafiz Rashid Ahmed Choudhury, Senior Advocate and AMU alumnus, spoke as the Senior Advisor, stressing the importance of education in fostering peace, harmony, and social progress.
A tribute was also paid to the late Zubeen Garg, honouring his lasting contribution to Assamese culture and music.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Ghaznavi Idris, Assistant Professor, Department of Bioengineering and Technology, Gauhati University. The celebration ended with the rendition of the AMU Tarana (University Song) followed by the National Anthem.
The occasion brought together alumni, academicians, legal professionals, and civil society members in a collective homage to Sir Syed Ahmad Khan’s legacy of education, reform, and unity.
