Morigaon: Two newly formed Eco-Development Committees (EDCs) of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary — Hadukpar and Rajamayong — along with Range staff of the sanctuary, conducted a massive awareness drive on Sunday morning in Greater Mayong, Morigaon. The initiative focused on plastic pollution and parthenium eradication ahead of the upcoming tourist season.
The drive was inaugurated by Range Officer Pranjal Baruah, AFS, in the presence of EDC presidents Manoj Nath and Dr. Utpal Nath. More than 200 people from Rajamayong village and the Forest Department participated, collecting and disposing of large amounts of single-use plastic from picnic spots and along a 2.5 km stretch of the Pobitora-Kamarpur Road.
The organisers said the objective was to make tourists, shopkeepers, tour operators, hotels, and resorts aware of the dangers of plastic waste and to encourage proper disposal using facilities like permanent dustbins installed by Morigaon Zila Parishad under Mayong Gaon Panchayat.
As part of a holistic approach, the Gaon Panchayat authority also put up glow signs and banners to educate visitors about waste management in the sanctuary, which is globally known for having the highest density of one-horned rhinos, with more than 107 individuals. The Mystique Mayong Resort also joined the drive, showcasing its commitment to proper waste disposal practices.
