CPI(M) to Contest 4–5 Seats in BTC Polls, Shortlists 15 for 2026 Assam Assembly Elections

Guwahati: With the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections approaching, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Thursday announced plans to contest four to five seats in the upcoming polls. The announcement was made during a press conference in Hedayatpur, Guwahati.

The party also revealed that it has identified 15 constituencies across Assam where it aims to field candidates in the 2026 Assembly elections. “The CPI(M) has decided to expedite its electoral preparations and has shortlisted 15 Assembly seats. As part of this strategy, we will contest 4–5 seats in the BTC polls,” the party said in a statement.

CPI(M) Assam State Secretary Suprakash Talukdar urged all Opposition parties, to begin alliance talks without delay under the Assam Sanmilita Mancha platform. “The bell for the 2026 elections has already rung. It is time for all democratic forces to unite and send a strong message to the people,” he said.

The CPI(M) also launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led government, accusing it of using recent eviction drives to stoke communal tensions, particularly targeting the Bengali-speaking Muslim community.
