Guwahati: A week-long workshop on urban flooding using Remote Sensing and GIS technology successfully concluded on November 23, 2024. The event, organized by the Department of Geography, Pandu College, in collaboration with Arya Vidyapeeth College (Autonomous), IQAC, NSS, and IIC of Pandu College, and Skyline Institute of Geo-informatics, New Delhi, brought together experts and participants from across the globe.
The workshop featured 16 sessions conducted by renowned academicians and professionals, including experts from Gauhati University, Pandu College, and Liverpool University, UK. A representative from the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Kamrup, also contributed valuable insights. Participants came from various institutions in Guwahati and Delhi to explore both theoretical and practical aspects of managing urban floods.
A field trip to Deepor Beel and the Kalmoni River on the final day provided firsthand knowledge of the region’s water bodies and drainage systems. The trip concluded with an on-site panel discussion involving students from Assam Downtown University. The discussion highlighted the pressing challenges faced by the Kalmoni River and Deepor Beel.
Dr. Sanchya Jyoti Bora, Principal and Chairperson of Pandu College, inaugurated the event on November 18. Dr. Pradip Kr. Bhattacharyya, Principal of Arya Vidyapeeth College, attended as the chief guest. Dr. Ravindrra Nath Tiwary, Academic Dean of Skyline Institute of Geoinformatics, delivered the keynote address.
The workshop produced 15 actionable recommendations to address Guwahati’s urban flooding issues using Remote Sensing and GIS. Dr. Niranjan Bhattacharjee, Chief Convener and Head of the Department of Geography at Pandu College, announced that these recommendations would be submitted to the government and other relevant authorities.
