Geneva: A journalist was assassinated in India’s Uttar Pradesh (UP), marking the fourth journalist death in India this year. The global media rights organization Press Emblem Campaign (PEC) condemned the killing and called for a thorough investigation.

Dilip Saini, 45, an International correspondent from Fatehpur, was stabbed to death on October 30, 2024, in Sadar Kotwali. Police have detained four suspects related to the case.

PEC President Blaise Lempen noted that Saini became the 118th journalist killed worldwide this year, and he emphasized the importance of transparent investigations into journalist murders to ensure justice. Lempen also raised concerns over the recent deaths of more than 150 journalists in Palestine and Lebanon following the Gaza conflict.

PEC’s South & Southeast Asia representative, Nava Thakuria, highlighted the worrying trends in India, where journalists Ashutosh Srivastava, Shivshankar Jha, and Salman Ali Khan were also murdered earlier this year. Neighboring countries such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Indonesia, and the Philippines also reported journalist casualties, underscoring the risks faced by media workers globally.
