Woman’s severed head allegedly recovered from refrigerator
Guwahati: A 25-year-old woman, identified as Riya Talukdar Goswami, was found dead under mysterious circumstances at Bashisthapur Bylane in Hatigaon – Beltola area of Guwahati, with the case taking a disturbing turn after investigators reportedly recovered her severed head from a refrigerator inside the residence.
The incident came to light on Sunday at a flat on the third floor of a building identified as Anjali Griha. Police reached the spot after receiving information about the death and began an investigation. Bloodstains and signs of disturbance were reportedly found inside the flat.
According to sources, Riya’s severed head was allegedly found wrapped in a black polythene bag inside the refrigerator. Other body parts were also suspected to have been kept separately in polythene bags. Police are examining whether the body was dismembered after the alleged killing and whether attempts were made to conceal the crime.
Riya’s husband, Ramanujan Goswami, has emerged as a key person of interest in the investigation and is reportedly untraceable. Goswami, who works as an Uber driver, had been living with Riya in the flat for around six months, according to information available locally.
Neighbours reportedly told police that the couple had frequent arguments. On Saturday night, residents allegedly heard loud conversations and commotion coming from the flat, followed by what sounded like a woman crying.
A local resident reportedly claimed to have seen Ramanujan around 8 pm on Saturday, which may form part of the investigators’ effort to establish his movements before and after the incident.
The circumstances surrounding the flat’s entrance have also drawn investigators’ attention. The door was reportedly found not properly secured, with a pair of socks allegedly being used to hold it from the outside.
Forensic teams have visited the scene and collected samples and other physical evidence. Fingerprints and other forensic materials are expected to help investigators reconstruct the sequence of events and establish the circumstances surrounding Riya’s death.
Police are examining several aspects of the case, including the possible time of death, the circumstances leading to the incident, whether the body was deliberately concealed, and Ramanujan’s movements following the alleged crime.
A search operation has reportedly been launched to trace Ramanujan Goswami. Investigators are also examining evidence gathered from the residence and questioning people who may have information about the couple’s activities and movements.
While the circumstances have raised suspicion of a murder, the exact motive and sequence of events have not yet been conclusively established. Police are expected to rely on forensic findings and other evidence to determine what exactly happened inside the Hatigaon residence.
The investigation remains underway, and the allegations against any individual will be subject to the findings of the police investigation and due legal process.
