Guwahati: The MS Road and HB Road in Guwahati’s busy Fancy Bazar area will be declared no-trading zones from September 1 as part of measures to ease traffic congestion and improve traffic and parking management.

A review meeting was held at the Kamrup Metropolitan District Commissioner’s office at Rupnagar, where Assam Cabinet Minister Kaushik Rai, Guwahati Municipal Corporation Mayor Mrigen Sarania, District Commissioner Swapnil Paul, GMC Commissioner Chinmoy Prakash Phukan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Jayanta Sarathi Bora, and officials from Assam Police and other concerned departments participated.

After detailed discussions, it was decided that MS Road and HB Road would be declared no-trading zones with effect from September 1.

Under the new traffic and parking arrangements:

  • Commercial vehicles will be allowed to operate between 9 pm and 7 am.
  • Parking facilities will remain available for vehicles used by the general public.
  • Handcarts (thela) will continue to be allowed.

A similar arrangement will also be introduced on SS Road, although the date for its implementation will be announced separately at a later stage.

GMC Mayor Mrigen Sarania said the measures have been taken to address the long-standing traffic congestion in Fancy Bazar and improve traffic management. He said the objective is also to ensure a more organised business environment and develop Fancy Bazar in a more planned and systematic manner.

Sarania said the concerned departments and agencies have been directed to take the necessary steps and expressed confidence that coordinated efforts would help resolve the traffic congestion problem in the area.

The move is expected to bring changes to traffic movement and commercial activities in one of Guwahati’s busiest commercial areas.
