Tamulpur: A tragic road accident late at night in Tamulpur district claimed the life of a 25-year-old Bihu dancer and left eleven others injured.
The accident took place at Naokata on the Tamulpur–Nagrijuli road when a traveller vehicle carrying members of the ‘Bhaskarjyoti Bihu Husori Team’ collided head-on with a speeding trailer coming from the opposite direction.
The deceased has been identified as Nishamani Haloi, a resident of Niz Jhargaon in Tamulpur, who died on the spot.
According to police, the traveller (AS-25-DC-5893) was carrying around 30 members of the Bihu group. They were travelling from Haribhanga in Nalbari to Bangalipara in Tamulpur to perform during Rongali Bihu celebrations.
The trailer involved in the accident was bearing registration number PB 03 AP 6681.
Those injured in the accident include Arun Medhi, Bidyut Das, Jagat Ray, driver Pankaj Baishya, Ankita Das, Ratan Kalita, Nitu Baruah, Shivani Baruah, Kabyashree Saruwa, and Dibakar Moran. Five of them are reported to be in critical condition and have been shifted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for advanced treatment.
The incident has cast a shadow over Rongali Bihu celebrations in the area, with locals expressing grief over the death of the young artist.
Police have started an investigation to find out the exact cause of the accident.
