Guwahati: A large protest rally was organised by Bharatiya Janata Party Mahila Morcha, Assam Pradesh, in Guwahati against the opposition to the Nari Shakti Vandan (Amendment) Act, 2026.
The programme was held at the College of Veterinary Science playground in Khanapara, where a large number of women gathered and took part in the march. The protest was against the stand taken by Congress and other opposition parties during the Special Session of Parliament held on April 16 and 17.
The bill aims to provide 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies.
Addressing the gathering, State BJP President Dilip Saikia said that Congress failed to ensure political rights for women despite ruling the country for many years. He added that under the leadership of Narendra Modi, the goal of 33% reservation for women will be achieved.
Former Union Minister Bijoya Chakravarty also criticised the opposition and said women should get proper representation in politics. During the event, she also sang a song by Bhupen Hazarika, which received a strong response from the crowd.
State BJP Mahila Morcha President Nilima Devi also spoke at the rally and criticised the opposition’s stand. Leaders from allied parties like AGP and BPF were also present.
Cultural performances by singers Shanta Uzir, Malabika Bora, and Sandhya Menon were part of the programme.
The rally saw large participation and focused on the demand for greater political representation of women in the country.
