Guwahati: The Balipara Foundation has announced the 12th Eastern Himalayan Naturenomics Forum (EHNF) to be held on November 26th and 27th, 2024, in Guwahati, Assam. Launched in 2013, this forum has become a leading platform for addressing conservation and sustainable livelihood challenges in the Eastern Himalayas. This year’s theme, “The Future of the Third Pole and the Himsagar (Eastern Himalaya),” will spotlight the environmental and ecological threats posed by climate change.
The Eastern Himalayas, a key part of the “Third Pole” region, is vital for regulating water supplies across Asia, supporting major river systems like the Brahmaputra, Ganges, and Yangtze. However, rapid glacial melt, shifting water flows, and increasing extreme weather events are endangering regional biodiversity and livelihoods.
Ranjit Barthakur, Founder of the Balipara Foundation, emphasized the importance of the forum, saying, “The Eastern Himalayas are essential for maintaining ecosystems and livelihoods, but climate change is disrupting seasonal flows, threatening millions downstream with flooding and loss of livelihoods.”
The forum will bring together global experts to discuss watershed management, forest conservation technology, energy transitions, sustainable land management, and policy development, ensuring continued innovation in addressing the region’s environmental challenges.
