Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court received a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) today seeking a CBI probe into the suspicious death of popular singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore on September 19, 2025.

Amitabh Sharma, an international human rights activist, lawyer, and president of Ekam Sanatan Bharat Dal and Khilonjia Adhikar Morcha, filed the petition. He asked the court to order a judicially monitored investigation into the incident.

What the PIL Demands

  • A CBI inquiry under Sections 47, 61, 62, and 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, monitored by the High Court
  • Interpol Red Corner Notice for anyone suspected of involvement
  • The Union Government to share all official communication with Singapore
  • An independent forensic board of senior doctors from AIIMS/CFSL to review the post-mortem report
  • Court-supervised testing and preservation of viscera, blood, and other samples

Addressing the media, Amitabh Sharma said, “Zubeen Garg was not just an artist; he was an emotion, an institution, and a cultural icon for the people of Assam and India. His sudden and suspicious death cannot be brushed aside. Transparency, truth, and justice demand a thorough investigation under judicial scrutiny.”

The PIL also cites provisions under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023, stressing the need for re-autopsy, admissibility of expert evidence, and steps to maintain public confidence in the investigation.

Sharma added that this filing marks “the first step” in the pursuit of justice for Zubeen Garg and that further legal action will follow.
